Praying for the Dead
In this month, we pray for the Church Suffering: those who have died and are in Purgatory. Since no one can be admitted to God's presence unless purified from sin (Psalm 5:4), those who die still attached to sin must undergo purification; the place of this purification or purgation is Purgatory.
By our prayers and sacrifices, we can help apply the merits of Christ's sacrifice to those suffering in Purgatory (CCC 1032).
It is possible to earn special relief for those suffering in Purgatory (a plenary indulgence) in many way this month. To learn more check this page.
"For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead. But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."
2 Maccabees 12:44-45
